Wisdom Wednesday: If you don’t take a picture it didn’t happen

This saying has been on my mind a lot lately as I navigate the tiny balance beam of life as a mother and wife and genealogist.

If you don’t take a picture, it didn’t happen.

My mom tells me all the time that when she was in my stage of life it was all she could do to scrapbook and keep up on the daily happenings in our (her children’s) lives. I bring up childhood memories to her I have to see if I have them right and she has no idea what I’m talking about, until I find a picture.

My latest obsession is Project Life by Becky Higgins. I’m so excited their Android app is launching next week. I haven’t made a single scrapbook or memory book for my kids and I’m feeling like a failure as I see her complete her latest project called Project Photo Rescue. (Read about it here.) Her first step in this project is to go around the house and gather all the scrapbooks you have made. She does this so you can see what you HAVE done, kind of help you feel better and not so stressed. Well, where she has 138 albums I have……. Zero. Yep. Oh sure I’ve thrown printed photos into a photo album filled with pockets but do they have journaling? Nope. Do they say who is in each picture? Nope.

Nolan’s super hero photo album

When Nolan was little he loved (still does) looking at photos so we found an album (super hero!) at the dollar store and filled it with pictures of him and our family. This book is still looked at all the time. I love the joy I see in his face as he looks through the pictures.

You would think with two little boys that LOVE to look through pictures and see themselves that I’d be scraping it up! Yeah That’s my goal this year to figure out a system that works for me.

Because moms know best and I want my children’s childhood to have “happened”

If you don’t take a picture, it didn’t happen.

What are some ways you preserve your living memories? When do you fit everything in???

You are at a busy time of your life, you’ll get there! You could have the boys help you scrapbook, it is there memories too, it may not look pretty or fancy, but they did it so it would be precious!
